Polar Bears: Endangered Species?

Today, the Bush Administration announced that Polar Bears in the Arctic would be a "Threatened" species according to the Endangered Species Act. This may or may not help the bears. At a recent press conference, Secretary of Interior, Dirk Kempthorne confirmed that Arctic sea ice, which as we all know is vital in a Polar Bear's survival, was rapidly melting. The U.S. Geological Service did studies and estimated that at least 30% of the Arctic ice will be gone by the middle of the century. Many of the groups that were fighting to get the Polar Bears under the list were disappointed. Carrol Muffet, a deputy campaign director for Greenpeace, said the following. "This changes nothing. They simultaneously acknowledge that global warming is likely to lead to polar bear extinction, while ruling out any action to address that problem." In my opinion, i think that they should move the Polar Bears or make a reserve for them so they could be safe. I also think that putting the Polar Bears under endangered species is more of a warning to people. When they see that the Polar Bears are endangered because of global warming it might make people want to pollute less and care for the environment more. We all love the Polar Bears, so lets hope for the best! :)
